Police estimates put the number of those present at close to 2,000 as Heywood paid tribute to the fallen on Remembrance Sunday.

New names of old soldiers were added to the Cenatoph in the memorial gardens, and a big crowd enjoyed a thoughtful but uplifting service.

The day is certainly getting more and more important in the town as Britain’s soldiers continue to fight and fall in conflicts around the globe.

After 37 years stuck behind the steering wheel of a lorry, John Fielding wants an altogether more stimulating experience of the English countryside. This Sunday there’s a fundraising event for Dylan Strudwick, an eight-year-old Heywood lad who has been diagnosed with cancer. There’s a charity football match at Heywood Sports Centre, starting at 1pm, and following this there is an auction at The Heywood where loads of great sporting memorabilia are up for auction.
