Report by John Heywood: Heywood under 13’s took part in the pre-season indoor 6 a side completion at the soccer factory in Castleton recently.

During the course of a really enjoyable afternoon Heywood took on local rivals Norden and Rochdale as well as Uppermill from the Saddleworth league.

Heywood won 2 and lost 1 in the round robin but did enough on scoring rates to secure a place in the winners final. Heywood narrowly lost the final to Norden. If we played Norden 10 times in that format we would probably win 5 and lose 5 there is very little between the 2 teams.

All the under 13 lads played 2 or 3 games and all showed so much ability I am confident we can take that ability onto the pitch on a Sunday morning when the real action starts.

There was some excellent cricket on display and some observations from myself on areas where we can improve and work on in training.

Special mentions to Rob Morley who is magnificent with the group and helps me no end when I have work commitments ( Big thanks again Rob ).

Thanks also to Russ Harding who eventually mastered the most complicated scoring system ever devised by man!! ( Thanks Russ – Top man ).

Finally to Mike Jackson for the Photography.

For the record

v         Norden                Won      ( Norden 230-2   -  Heywood 250-1 )

v         Upermill               Lost        ( Heywood 220-4  – Uppermill 231-3 )

v         Rochdale             Won      ( Rochdale 217 -8   – Heywood 243-3 )

Winners Final

v         Norden                Lost        ( Norden 45-1 – Heywood 10-3 )

In this format losing wickets = minus 5 runs so the value is obvious in playing straight and protecting your wicket to the better balls and using your ability to score when the ball is full / short or wider.

John Holder turned up ( Ex West Indian and ICC Test Umpire ) and as I chatted with him he was very complimentary on the attitude and enthusiasm shown. Let’s keep the levels of enthusiasm up and that will carry us a long way when we start to play on a Sunday morning.
