Here is under-13s coach John Heywood on his side’s performance in this week’s indoor competition at Kingsway Sports Centre.

Thanks to Ross Zelem for scoring. Ross is helping me this year with the U13’s and all the lads should look at his achievements for inspiration.

Ross made his Heywood first team debut two seasons ago aged just 15 and already has scored some big runs in the first team. Ross has also been selected to represent Lancashire in age groups beyond his years.

I am really pleased Ross has agreed to work with the team in training this season on Tuesday nights. We are lucky to have him.

Back to the tournament. Thanks to all for being so timely and ready to start at 1pm.

Three of the four games I thought we were very competitive and although our record finished played 4 won 1 Lost 3 this could easily have been reversed 3-1 with a little more luck.

Norden – Lost

We found our feet really in the opener and lost narrowly.

A few more runs on the board and if we had taken one half chance catch we missed this would have been the difference.

It was a difficult chance coming quickly in harsh lighting and I know those incrediballs really move about indoors. A positive start. Unlucky to lose.

Littleborough – Lost

I thought we played really well but we lost one or two many wickets and ultimately that cost us the game. Littleborough looked like they had a side full of year eights and their extra year experience showed.

Milnrow – Won

Our only win – we looked full of promise for the season ahead. Some brilliant bowling matched with some amazing catches and restricted Milnrow to only 7 runs in 6 overs.

All three Heywood pairs then batted very sensibly whilst showing we had some attacking shot makers and we ran out easy winners by 40+ runs.

Rochdale – Lost

The one that got away and we really should have won this one. Batting first we scored an above par 58.

It came down to the last ball and we needed a wicket to win. The Rochdale batsmen played a ball into the netting and we lost what was a close game.

Summing up, I hope the lads all enjoyed the afternoon and every player who attended today will be very much a part and an important squad member for the under 13’s this season.

What impressed me more than anything was already they look to be gelling as a team. There are some really encouraging pointers to come from the day.

I will be in touch when I hear more about the pre season nets that we have planned in a few weeks time.

  1. My pics are a bit dark and not the best, but they are a flavour of the day. It was a well-run event and thanks to Sam Holt for organising it and John Holder and Bob Chadwick for umpiring. Good to see John Heywood walking around like a Basketball coach and he did a great job for the lads. Ross deserves maximum credit for doing the scoring because it was a bit mental. All good lads who behaved well, looked like a team and have plenty of talent. Good luck this season and I look forward to working with you all
