I don’t know how many people know about this http://www.oldham-chronicle.co.uk/news-features/13/local-sport-news/67241/oldham-ccs-future-in-jeopardy.

There’s a meeting tonight at the Pollards about their future in the league. Again.

It seems that summer rugby is a big factor in this, as it is bound to be in Oldham.

What will it mean to the league? Any thoughts? Will any of the myriad players who have come through the club’s youth ranks ride to their rescue?

  1. very sad day if occ cease to play cricket in the cll. i know a few people who cant stand the thought of playing at the pollards on a cold windy day. i know of a lot more who dont like the idea of playing on a warm sunny day either. things come round in cycles and i dont think the league have helped them very much through these lean times. i think a points deduction would have been enough of a punishment for the fiasco last season instead of a £500 fine when they know the club is on its knees. I also think the club need to start helping themselves and make better decisions regarding how the club is run. As for people going back who came through the junior ranks,i dont think there is the commitment anymore at oldham as there was in the 80′s and 90′s. its a sad state of affairs when your top juniors who make it into the first team get offered some money stuffed in their shoe so upsticks and leave. they know who they are. the best thing the league can do is try and clampdown on this and if there is a whiff of underhand payments investigate and act on it accordingly

  2. Totally agree with your comments.
When debating the 2 division scenario on here I did mention that there were steps that the league could/should be taking to improve matters before taking the leap of splitting the league (which may have dire consequences for some) – your coments re stamping out the paying of ‘amateurs’ and assisting those in trouble rather than kicking them are two suggestions I made.

You are right that there are many who don’t like playing at the Pollards but I guess I’m in a minority when I say I have no issue playing there and would prefer it to a number of other grounds.
I sincerely hope Oldham are able to continue and they get whatever assistance is needed to turn things around again.

  3. Carl.
I’m posting this not knowing the out come of last nights meeting.

You make some very valid points regarding the paying of amateurs, but dont blame the players, blame the clubs/individuals who make these stupid decisions to pay players who 10/15 years ago would not have even got into most 1st teams. Paying players does not work and never will and i’m suprised that these people can’t see it.
You only have to look at the demise of clubs that have recently paid players in the CLL (I wish i could name them) we all know who they are, even this coming season this is going to happen blatently obvious to all and sundry but apparantly not to the CLL management committee.

Regarding the situation at Oldham, its sad to see any cricket club struggling to survive, members at Heywood will remember the crisis meeting we had in the late 90′s.
Its not players that will keep clubs afloat, you need a well run committee with people who are committed to the club, whats happend to hugly successfull Oldham teams of the 70′s and 80′s where are all these ex players, its these people who should be driving the club on. Yes you are correct playing at Oldham on cold wet day is no pleasure (where is) but i remember my early days playing at the pollards when you came away thinking you had played in a rugby match not cricket, it was that competitive. Playing against a good aggresive team with always a good professional on one of the best tracks in the league was something i always looked forward to.

If the worst happens it will be a very sad day for the Oldham club, the CLL and all who love the game of cricket, even me!
