REPORT BY JOHN HEYWOOD: On a rare Sunny Sunday morning at Crimble, Heywood Under 13’s were in a dominant mood against a Radcliffe side with an identical league record.

Radcliffe batted first and the Heywood bowlers never allowed Radcliffe any fluidity for a full 20 overs in probably the best fielding performance of the season so far against a similar ability team. The fielding was much improved and the energy shown and the backing up and support work was exactly – where we need to be for the remainder of the season.

Heywood took wickets at crucial times and two top drawer catches from Shoeb and Harry removed two danger men from the Radcliffe batting line up. Heywood still managed to bowl nine different bowlers, such is the strength in depth in this talented team.

The wicket was slow and low so the Radcliffe final total of 70-5 could have been anything, although my gut reaction at half time was that the score was below par by as many as 20 to 30.

Regardless, 70, 80 or 90 still needed getting and Heywood did so in style.

Harry Bevan, promoted to opener as Billy is in France on a school trip, batted superbly and with Danny James supporting at the other end Heywood won at a canter. Harry scored 25* and retired and Danny played very nicely for 22 before losing a little concentration being caught out just as we approached the winning line.

Keelan Nugent blasted 16 in one over and then was very unfortunate to be run out. This left Danny Joesbury and Sam Sweeney to hit the winning runs and Heywood were 74-2 in the 11th over.

To win with nine overs to spare against a second place in the league contender just shows what talent this team has. Fergie had his fledglings, well I think I have mine. If this set of lads continue to show the same level of progression they can all go all the way and represent the club at senior level within the next few years.

Indeed, Danny James and Keelan Nugent have already had call ups to the adult 3rd team, but sadly both games were rained off. They certainly would have done the under-13 set up proud given the chance.

I will be thanking all the lads personally on Tuesday at training as they have stepped right up to the plate and been magnificent. There are four games to go in the league and with the same application and concentration I can only see us winning all four.

Next up is Walsden away on Sunday 15th July.

Well done everybody.
