Heywood under-18s finally enjoyed some good weather as they made light work of a good Royton side at Crimble last night.

Captain Andy Dawson led the way with the ball, his hostile five overs yielding the excellent figures of 4-9. He was backed up by an equally frugal spell of 0-8 off five overs from Humza Naeem.

Good fielding and more good bowling saw Royton bowled out for just 58, which was something of a recovery as numbers seven and eight top scored with 13 apiece.

In reply and with the weather always threatening, Dawson and Joe Lovell tried to get the match over quickly. But credit must go to the Royton attack,  who dismissed the pair and the in-form Dom Fawcett with just 32 on the board.

However, the calm head of Wes Hunt and the improving Callum Openshaw dug in and ensured there was to be no embarrassment, scoring an unbeaten 14 and 12 respectively to take Heywood to 59-3 and a victory which keeps them still in with a chance of league victory.
