HEYWOOD’S first team bid to build on an exciting opening day victory in their first home Greater Manchester Cricket League outing of the new season this coming weekend.

They take on Denton West at Crimble on Saturday (April 24) following their win at Glossop, where the visitors chased a target of more than 250 to get off to a successful start.

Heywood were set a stiff task by Glossop, who posted 254-6 from their 50 openers. But a fourth-wicket partnership of 164 between professional Amar Ullah (96) and new signing Fayaz Ughradar (67) turned things around.

And Heywood’s other new boy, Caleb Grant, then also played a crucial role with an unbeaten 35 to get the team home with one ball to spare.

The professional had earlier also shone with the ball, claiming 4-62 with his left-arm spin to stop the home side from posting an even bigger total.

Back into the side for the Denton West clash come Andy Dawson and Cav Hilton, who were both unavailable for the trip to Glossop.

The second team go to Oldham area club Moorside the same day led by after falling just two runs short in their opening home game against Mottram.

Conor McNally shone with a 5-28 spell as the visitors made 139-8, then skipper Mikey Grogan hit 60 as his side fell just short.

The third team go to Tottington St John’s on Sunday hoping to build on their opening day victory at Brooksbottom. The visitors made 143, led by 40 from Jacob Kaye, 28 by Jamie McCulloch Snr and 26 by Ethan Clarkson, then toppled the home side for 140 – thanks to a devastating 5-6 spell from six overs by Will Taylor to pull the match out of the fire.
