Three wickets for Sam Byrne

Three wickets for Sam Byrne

Heywood Seconds made short work of Werneth at Crimble on Sunday to continue their quest for a league and cup double.

It was a great all-round performance against a side capable of upsetting the best teams on their day, but who can be very weak on others.

Werneth won the toss and were soon in trouble to the ultra-reliable new-ball attack of Rick Purser and Lee Grogan.

Only number four James Taylor looked in any sort of nick, as was proved when he smashed Purser for consecutive sixes and took toll of the odd wayward delivery from Grogan.

But with wickers falling at the other end, it was always an uphill task for Werneth and they succumbed for a poor 112 off just  37.2 overs. Purser and Sam Byrne took three wickets apiece, while Grogan and Dom Fawcett took two apiece.

In reply no one batted with real fluency for Heywood early doors, but Sean Burrill – who is starting to impress despite the odd blip – hit a good 24 before Adam Fawcett saw Heywood home to a five point win.

Smethurst was delighted with this result, and the previous day’s defeat of Middleton.

He said: “All in all it was a very satisfactory weekend with 10 points picked up and some good individual performances.

“The coming weekend sees us face Clifton in both the League and Cup. These are likely to be two tough games against a side with a good combination of youth and experience.

“The team will obviously be keen to make up for a defeat in last year’s Burton Cup Final and should hopefully have players back with 1st team players returning from holidays.”

  1. Great stuff fellas!
Good luck for the weekend to both teams.
What are the odds on a Heywood v Walsden final in both Wood and Burton cups – trivia question – when was last time the same two clubs provided the finalists in both competitions in the same season? (must be rare but no doubt somebody will tell me it happened only 3 years ago!).
