Well it’s been a long five weeks in many respects, but the five Heywood players (past and present) who have attended the UKCC Level 2 Coaching Course at Old Trafford have so far come away with flying colours.

Myself and John Heywood represent the old guard, while Danny Pawson, Adam Fawcett and Dale Latham are the current players who will hopefully reap the rewards of the course, which finished on Sunday.

All five of us passed the written exam and everyone has progressed from nervy starters in group coaching to more confident characters who will soon put our skills to the good use of Heywood Cricket Club.

There is still a final practical exam to go in May, but there will be plenty of opportunities for us to hone our skills beforehand at Crimble and hopefully make the club a great place to be for young people in the town.

I, certainly, have gained many things from an excellently constructed course that has made us think on our feet and shed any inhibitions we may have had.

John Heywood

John has had some experience with junior cricket last season, and his confidence and enthusiasm has been great to see. Even at our final coaching session – in front of assessors yesterday – John could be heard across the hall encouraging and coaching in a manner which will ensure his under-13s have a great time learning the game.

Danny, Adam and Dale are a good deal younger than myself and John and I’m not sure that I would have had the enthusiasm and confidence to undertake this course when I was at that age. All three have visibly grown in confidence and knowledge, and I am certain that all three will make significant contributions to further improving the standard of youth cricket at Crimble, as well as making it a FUNdamentally enjoyable place to be.

As for myself, I was very nervous at first as I haven’t played for a while and wondered if I would be a bit out of my depth. But I must say the people on the course have all been extremely enthusiastic and supportive, and I wish them all well for the future.

Finally, I would like to – on behalf of us five and Heywood CC – thank JP and ‘Scud’ for making the course an enjoyable and worthwhile exercise. They ensured it was far from dry and provided a steep but achievable learning curve. Watch out for Danny’s use of JP’s catch phrase ‘WOW’ in many a sarcastic situation behind the stumps next season.

Also, thanks to Gwen Edwards for finding the funding for the course (from Siddal Moor, I think, so thanks to them) and also thanks in advance to everyone at HCC for their patience in the coming months as we learn our trade.

I can only think this will make the club an even better and more vibrant place for young people to enjoy and learn their cricket.

Cheers
Scoop

  1. There was a time when the words’ Scoop ‘and ‘coaching’, would never have been heard in the same sentence ! Well done to Scott,Danny,Adam,Dale and Fash for giving up their time and learning another aspect of the game. Since the coaching regime at the club has been re-jigged it is brilliant to be at the club on a Tuesday night in summer and see well organised sessions being delivered so enthusiastically. The club seems to have come on in leaps and bounds in the last 18 months.

  2. Congratulatuions to the ‘Not so famous five’ for completing your course. It really is pleasing when you have youth like Adam, Dale & Danny as well as experience in John & Scott becoming an integral part of the club – well done lads. I would like also to remember that Tom Blundell has been taking his level 2 whilst studying at Leeds Uni. Well done Tom and thanks for getting invloved.
