HEYWOOD have made what they believe to be a significant signing as professional for the coming 2019 season.

He is Faisal Iqbal, 37, who has played 26 Test matches for Pakistan between 2001 and 2010 and 18 one-day internationals. His uncle is Javed Miandad, one of Pakistan’s greatest ever batsmen.

Faisal is a right-hand batsman, who has made 1,224 runs in Tests for his country at an average of 26.76 with a high score of 139. He is also a right-arm off-break bowler.

He played for Sandford in the Devon Premier League last season, scoring 758 runs at an average of 63.17 with a top score of 102 not out, and also for Bovey Tracey in the same set-up in 2010.

+ HEYWOOD would like to thank Gary Hunt at Cric-intro for his help with this signing.

  1. Greetings to all my old friends at Heywood.
I was amazed to read that you have signed Faisal Iqbal as your pro for 2019. What a coincidence since I have been a member at Sandford (his last club) since I moved south 25 years ago.
Faisal kept us in the premier division last season simply because he saw the value of picking up bonus points for batting and bowling in matches which were most unlikely to be won. He is brighter than most!
He is still capable of scoring 1000 runs given a decent summer and is a relatively mean bowler. Don’t expect too many wickets.
If your aim is to get straight back to the premier league as well as to bring on young players you’ve signed the right man.
    Good luck, Colin.

  2. Hi Colin.

Coincidence indeed, whilst we were negotiating the contract I was aware that he had played in Devon last season it never even crossed my mind he was at your club. Had I known this I would have asked you for your opinion and it would have probably saved me some time.

However its comforting to hear that you rate him as a batsman and reasonable bowler, also as you have eluded to he is good with young players as he will have coaching duties during the week.

Judging by his 1st class record where he is still averaging 40 hopefully we have signed a player who can play a big part in getting the club back in the premier division.

    Hope you are keeping well.
    Best Regards
    David
