REPORT BY ROGER SMETHURST: Heywood’s second team, desperate for a victory in their bid to retain their current league status, donned their wellies and waterproofs for three hours on Saturday afternoon as they sought to remove the week’s heavy rainfall to enable a clash with their Denton counterparts to occur.

After much negotiation and perseverance by home umpire Stuart Russell, a 22-over game eventually commenced at 16.15 hours with Heywood batting first.

Mikey Grogan and Dominic Fawcett got Heywood off to a flying start, and, when Fawcett was the first to depart for 32 in the 11th over, Heywood looked set for a formidable score.

Unfortunately, only Grogan was able to maintain this momentum, and when he went for 37 trying one big hit too many the Heywood innings stalled against the leg spin of Stenson and accurate seamers of Beech.

Heywood eventually finished on 115-7 from their 22 overs but had a feeling of what might have been, scoring only 40 runs in the 11 overs following Fawcett’s dismissal after the openers had put on 74 in the first 11 overs.

Early wickets were crucial for Heywood to have any chance of success and, unfortunately, it took the Heywood attack six overs to make a breakthrough, Baig snaring Leach with the score on 30.

Heywood’s spinners came into the attack and, when Chris Kaye took two wickets in two balls, a glimmer of hope appeared for the home side.

The visitors, however, refused to become bogged down and took every opportunity to look to play positively to the short boundary.

Despite a further wicket for Kaye and two for Grogan the away team reached their target, hitting a boundary off the last ball of the 21st over.

This result was tough on the home side, who worked hard all day to get a game on and started positively with the bat.

As in recent weeks Steve Evans’ team came a close second, just failing to get over the line, and with only four games remaining it looks tough for the side to retain their Division 3 East status.
