Chris Kaye can top the CLL wicket takers with a good weekend

Heywood go into the final weekend of the season with team and individual honours on the line.

They host Walsden on Saturday then Royton on Sunday. They are currently just three points ahead of Littleborough in third, although are assured of fourth spot and a place in the Lancashire Cup.

On an individual level, Chris Kaye, in what increasingly looks likely to be his final season, goes into the weekend with 54 league wickets (Chris says it is 55, but the CLL website indicates otherwise) with Norden’s Olly Makin his closest contender (I think – the averages are a week out of date, see below).

1000 runs in Bobby Cross' grasp

It would be a remarkable achievement for the veteran to finish leading wicket taker in the CLL, but his eight wickets last weekend showed there is still plenty of life left in the wily left-armer and all at Crimble will be hoping he can finish with the sort of accolade his commitment and talent deserve.

With the bat, Bobby Cross is hoping for another 16 runs to pass 1000 runs for a season again.

Cross has been magnificent again this season for Heywood, and following scores of 82 against Werneth and 48 at Clifton, this milestone is well in his grasp again.

There is also plenty to play for in the relegation battle from the top flight.

Rochdale fought hard to beat Royton last weekend, and are now five points clear of Werneth at the bottom.

This could go to a final day shoot-out as Werneth travel to Rochdale on the final day of the season.

Heywood’s seconds travel to Walsden and Unsworth hoping to end their season on a high after a series of fine performances. They lose in-form Sean Burrill to the first XI on Saturday.

Heywood CC 2nd XI (v Walsden, a, Saturday, v Unsworth, a Sunday. 12.15pm start, meet 11am) R Smethurst, M Hood, M Wright, T Blundell, M Grogan, C Booth, D Fawcett, K Nugent, M Kenny, J Mills, R Purser. Res: J Morley. Sunday: Add S Burrill.
