“You could really hear the ball fizzle when Duncan Carter bowled.” It was just the sort of thing I wanted to hear when I spoke to one of Heywood’s best amateur batsmen and my current neighbour Jimmy Porter recently. A left-handed opening bat and one-time wicket-keeper Jimmy, 68, played in some of Heywood’s greatest teams Click here for more ….

Heywood CC cricket chairman David Fare is adamant “something had to change” to improve rapidly falling standards in the Central Lancashire League. Fare was Heywood’s representative at the CLL’s EGM last Friday, which saw clubs vote 11-5 in favour of splitting the league into two divisions of eight, with promotion and relegation. The move has Click here for more ….

We’ll discuss several issues but the main debating point is continued discussion of Norden’s proposal for a two division structure in the CLL. BY STEVE McHUGH: DAVID Fare has stepped down after being one of the longest-serving chairmen in Heywood Cricket Club history. The 62-year-old, who took over from Clive Ellis in 1994, handed over the reins to Mike Law at the annual meeting. But Fare, who is still turning out for the second team and is the Click here for more ….

John Kaye played for Heywood from 1982 to 1996 and was a member of the most successful youth sides in the club’s history. Another from Vernon, and another with me in it. From the Whittaker Cup final 1989. The second win on the trot for that team. Not many if anyone still playing now. A long time ago! (poor quality scan but can be made out)

A bit of self-indulgence. I’ve got some old cuttings from Vernon Connolly that I am putting online and the first one up is evidence that every now and again, I could bat. Bear in mind, in those days I used to write the reports as well as play. My innings may not have been quite Click here for more ….

Chairman David Fare has confirmed the signing of our professional for next season. We have signed South African Travis Townsend for the 2012 season. He’s a right-handed batsman from Western Province, who spent last season playing for Somerset seconds. He also, I believe, bowls a bit of off-spin. He can be found on Cricinfo here. A few team pictures here from Heywood Cricket Club first, second and junior teams. I recognise a lot of them, including most of the (I think) 1983 Wood Cup final side, with such legends as Jimmy Porter, David Fare and Mark Wright. I can also name most of the junior players on the pictures. Please Click here for more ….

It’s little wonder Heywood was such a powerful club in the mid 2000s with the likes of Aussie amateur Royce Blight in our ranks. Royce undoubtedly ranks up there with the best amateur batsmen ever to play for Heywood, and his wealth of runs, passion and love of ale marks him down as an all-time Click here for more ….
