LANCS1223Supporters braved the weather and enjoyed Crimble hospitality as a Heywood CC XI won the first match of the season on a freezing cold Easter Monday. Heywood beat a Lancashire under-19s XI by five wickets, with some encouraging performances across the board. Most encouraging from a Heywood point of view was Andy Dawson. For a second successive day, Heywood seconds’ failed to turn up and paid the ultimate price. Another poor performance with the bat left Heywood’s bowlers with it all to do at home to Royton, and on an improving wicket and quicker outfield, Heywood were always in trouble after posting just 139-9 off 47 overs. Heywood seconds’ Burton Cup dream was ended by a superior Middleton team at Crimble on Saturday. Yes, a poor wicket and some indiscipline from Heywood contributed to their below-par total of 107 all out, but Middleton bowled straighter than Heywood and gave the batsmen little to hit.
