Heywood’s bowlers and fielders turned in their best performance for 82 years as they simply obliterated Milnrow at Ladyhouse on Saturday.
Not since 1930 – when Middleton were blown away for just 18 at Towncroft – had a Heywood side bowled a side out for a total as paltry as the 24 that Milnrow managed.
It was the third lowest total a team had posted against Heywood, and while there was certainly some help from the wicket and some poor shots, nothing should be taken away from a magnificent performance in the field.
Leading the way was pro Travis Townsend, who picked up his second set of stunning figures of the season against Milnrow. He took 5-12 of 7.1 overs, and was marvellously aided and abetted by some sublime fielding in the slips by captain Bobby Cross, who held on to two exceptional slip catches.
Overseas amateur Hamish Paterson continues to shine and his control of line and length at a decent pace was way too good for Milnrow’s batsmen, who could only prod at – and occasionally miss – Paterson’s well-directed spell. He finished with the equally impressive figures of 4-11 off 8.
If that wasn’t enough, Humza Naeem swooped from cover to pull off a superb run out to leave Milnrow 11-2, and nearly had another shortly after.
Milnrow lost four wickets with the score on 17 – Townsend was on a hat-trick at one stage – including pro Babar Naeem, whose attempt to avoid the new ball reaped the lack of reward it deserved, and Milnrow were scuppered.
Cross sent in Andy Dawson with Ross Zelem to try to knock the runs off quickly, and the pair looked set to do it without loss until Dawson smashed a long-hop to Wilson at mid-on with the scores level.
But Zelem hit the winning run and Heywood achieved the nine-wicket victory that laves Walsden knowing they can’t afford to slip up at any stage.
