2017 has been another good year for Heywood youngster Olivia Thomas as she follows in the footsteps of several other female players at Heywood CC.
At club level she has been playing for the Under 13 side and has ended the season averaging 79 with the bat having only been dismissed once in seven innings and retiring four times.
Olivia had success with the ball when she stepped up to Under 15′s with wickets in every match she played and her Heywood highlight was scoring 21 in the Under 18 side against a senior boys bowling attack.
Whilst 3rd XI cricket has often clashed with Olivia’s commitments to Tottington she has played when available and has even managed an appearance, and a not out, in the 2nd XI.
Away from club appearances Olivia has carried on the proud tradition of Heywood girls playing for Lancashire and has featured at both Under 13 and Under 15 for the Red Rose side. Averaging 32 with the bat she also ended up captaining the Under 15 Development side at the National Championships at Malvern College in August.
A fine season was capped off with an excellent 60 not out where Olivia batted through the innings.
Olivia is a great example of a young player who loves cricket and the opportunity to improve and continues to work hard on her leg spin under the guidance of former Lancashire and England spinner Chris Schofield.
Let’s hope for a great 2018 season where Olivia, and all our Heywood youngsters, can showcase their abilities and continue to push for Lancashire recognition.
