Bobby Cross wrote himself another chapter in the history of the JW Lees Wood Cup as Heywood completed victory over Walsden tonight.

Cross played what is being hailed as one of the finest final innings of all time in the Wood Cup, finishing unbeaten on 88 as Heywood overhauled Walsden’s target of 163.

The Heywood skipper has played some great knocks over the years, scoring 14 centuries and more than 11,000 runs for Heywood, but leading his young side to victory over a talented Walsden side at Crimble must be close to the best moment of his career.

It was also the 11th time Heywood have won the Wood Cup, but the first since 2007.

Starting the third day of the match on 69, alongside Andy Dawson, who was 26 not out, Heywood still required 39 to win.

Dawson hit Shackleton for four in the first over through extra cover to ease the tensions, and it was a shame when he was caught behind off pro Richard Sladdin’s final ball for 35. The pair had put on a brilliant 74 runs for the sixth wicket.

But Cross was, as ever, undaunted and he and Riley Paterson kept calm and saw Heywood home with seven overs to spare on 164-6.

Cross was a clear winner of the man-of-the-match award, but special mention had to go to Chris Kaye for his marvellous spell of 3-12 off 10 overs on Sunday, and Josh Gale for his 3-28.

Heywood pro Travis Townsend won the man-of-the-series award for his bowling performances and runs in earlier games.

WALSDEN 163-9 (Kaye 3-12, Paterson 3-32)

HEYWOOD (overnight 125-5)

R Cross not out 88
A Dawson c Rawlinson b Sladdin 35
R Paterson not out 2
Extras 15
Total (for 6 wkts, 43 overs) 164
Fall of wickets: 1-2, 2-28, 3-72, 5-72, 6-146
Bowling: Shackleton 9-1-27-0, Hoosen 5-0-17-0, S Barker 7-1-21-1, Joe Gale 6-1-26-0, Sladdin 10-0-29-1, Harkal 1-0-14-0, Josh Gale 5-1-28-3

  1. Brilliant, congratulations and well done to all involved! I hope the mid-week celebrations will be as barmy as if we’d have won Sunday; much deserved. Tip of the cap to master Cross.

  2. Congrats guys, another wood cup at the club. I hope you guys enjoy the celebrations after a good win. Well done to Bob on a good performances, nothing beats experience. It”s always good to lead from the front, well done mate.

  3. What a fantastic win that was, well done to all the lads especially Bobby, Andy and Chris for thier match winning efforts.
Job only just started, time to focus on big weekend coming up need to win at the postage stamp this weekend and Lancs KO Sunday.
String a few wins together now and it really could be a season to remember.
Good luck to Roger and the boys on Sunday after last night I belive that we really can go there and make it a double.
Also thanks to the all the Heywood people who attended the last few days the club is lucky to have your support.

  4. Congratulations and well done. Fantastic win. Good luck on Sunday. Lets get that Cup too. Best of luck to Roger and the guys for Sunday.

  5. Very proud last night, and very nervous. Good job I wasn’t playing. Obviously, the focus was on Bobby for a tremendous knock, and Andy for his invaluable contribution. More of the same from now on, Andy!
But I think we should give credit for a top all-round team performance, particularly in the field. The catches by Bobby, Ross and Andy were exceptional, and Chris Kaye’s bowling was better than ever.
With the talent currently at our disposal, Heywood can go on to even greater things, starting with the Lancashire Cup quarter-final and the Burton Cup final on Sunday.
It’s an exciting era for the club, players and supporters.

  6. Very proud man today, the club showed itself in its full quality staging this game over several days and night, huge thanks to JW Lees and all the volunteers that made it possible.

I thought it was a brilliant effort to beat Walsden, like us they have a home grown side full of lads keen to represent their club and full of ability, they will be around for a long time to come and will give our boys something to aspire to and challenge.

It caps a very proud week for me given the real achievement of the week which was Kate knocking the Aussie top order over, so pleased for her.

Finally last night was the culmination of a dream I’ve held for exactly 20 years, I’ve always wanted to emulate dad and walk off at Crimble having hit the winning runs in a Wood Cup Final!

    Very proud Heywood lad today.

  7. The club is definitely benefiting from great facilities, a great ground and staggering amounts of time given off the field by members and volunteers. The amount of people offering help now has to be at an all-time high, and the atmosphere and support from the people of Heywood is getting better and better. It is a potential golden era for the club and we really want Crimble to be somewhere everyone from Heywood can be involved with and enjoy coming down to.
Now let’s hammer Walsden twos and Barnoldswick on Sunday, both Norden’s on Saturday, and enjoy more success. Up The Wood

  8. A massive congratulations to all involved, a brilliant effort in bringing ‘our’ cup back to Crimble.

As you would expect CK and the Goat man led from the front but I’m so happy for those younger members of the side who get to taste this for the first time. I’m sure they are now hungry for even more success.

Let’s carry on for the rest of the season, starting with a demolishing of Norden on Saturday please….gutted to be missing the game on Saturday, even more so as I have recently discovered that it’s 2 for 1 on a fun day pass at Stag Park! ;)

Best of luck to all the lads in the 2nds at weekend also another great occasion for the club!!

Wally ( Can’t see anything on Groupon regarding the 2 for 1 passes??)

  9. Great victory and well deserved,Bobby!Sorry I wasn’t able to be there but also thanks to everyone who kept me informed of the progress!

  10. Brilliant win guys!
Fantastic performances from Bobby and Chris – I guess we come to expect those such is their quality. But even better for the future to see Andy play a vital part in his first season proper in the firsts – you always did have the talent Andy – more of the same now.
Thanks Scott for the regular updates on here – my only link to reality from here in Bahrain.
Now it’s time for the seconds to do it – we can definitely win there as we are easily their equals with our best team – good luck Roger and the lads!

  11. Superb effort from the first team lads – well deserved. I missed the exciting bit being away on business but I knew Crossy would get us over the line. I know what you mean Bobby ,about being in the middle when the cup is won – I was with your dad at the other end on that glorious day @ Crimble in 1993 and its just about as good it gets for us amateur batsmen. I hope the youngsters have more than a fleeting memory of the final as it can easily just pass you by –
More important games coming up so lets win everything in sight.
League and cup treble for the Ones
League and cup double for the Scooby Doos
Special Good luck to Roger for Sunday – lets bury last years memory of the Burton Cup final and fill that trophy cabinet to bursting – If ever a man deserves a little glory its the Sherrif

p.s Due to not being eligible if we win the league, I will cope with both teams not winning the SUBSID – but if the league titles are ultimately beyond us, I expect all players to put that bit extra in for the last 6 games

  12. Every now and then we get a post from a somewhat understated ‘S Campbell’. There may be newer members who are unaware that this is the mercurial Sherwin Campell who opened the batting for the Windies in the ’90s. With great respect to many of our terriffic batting pro’s,(Ruevin, Suggy, Bruce, Aby, Steve and Cooky) Sherwin would have to rank alongside Andy Flower as the best batsman I have seen playing for our club, and also the finest demolisher of a bottle of brandy. There have also been Facebook posts this week from Johan Botha and Steven John and I find it heartwarming that these former Pro’s find time to think about HCC. Andy Flower also has been in touch by text this week anxious to keep up to date with the Wood Cup Final. No one who plays for Heywood ever forgets us.

  13. Congratulations on your victory and best of luck in the Lancashire cup on Sunday
The organisation of the final was superb especialy the Buffet Thanks to the Ladies and your commitee
We look forward to Sunday and a great final and the chance to exact revenge
Allan Stuttard, Cricket chair man Walsden CC
