Heywood Under 13s have begun their season with a friendly against old rivals Rochdale.
The game was originally planned for Easter Sunday but, despite excellent support from all concerned, the weather forced a decision to abandon the match.
However, both sides showed a desire to play, resulting in managers, coaches, players and parents all agreeing to return to the Crimble the following day for a Bank Holiday Monday game.
Monday morning came and at 7am there was drizzle in the air. But this did not last too long and the clouds began to break.
A pitch inspection revealed that the wicket was simply not playable, but again the support and drive to get the game on was fantastic and a makeshift wicket was prepared to salvage the match.
Rochdale batted first and posted a competitive target of 74. Heywood sadly fell short of the target, managing to score 49 in their innings, and as the result went the way of the visitors.
Both teams showed signs of the effect of the winter break and some fielding errors potentially proved costly. But, considering this was the first game of the new year, promise for the season ahead shone through.
Both sets of players worked hard on the day and were a credit to their respective clubs and parents alike. As always there was no shortage of volunteers on the day, and this support is greatly appreciated by the Under-13s team and Junior Committee.
