REPORT BY ROB MORLEY: A YOUNG Heywood 3rd X1 team scored an encouraging 116-run win in a rain-affected match away to Failsworth Macedonia 2nd X1 in their second match in the Sunday North East Division of the Greater Manchester League.
A damp start to the day did not dampen the spirits of the visitors on their adventure to new territory. The wicket was covered, which was a good start, but when the covers where removed the track was green and somewhat damp.
And with light drizzle in the air and more rain forecast thoughts turned to whether the game would get started.
But the captains and umpires agreed to proceed and, when Heywood won the toss and elected to bat, skipper Rob Morley opened along with young Michael Witts only for the former to fall for five.
Joe Humphreys and Witts soon had the score going along at five an over when a miscommunication between the pair saw Witts run out for 19.
Jack Morley joined Humphreys in the middle and the duo quickly put together a 50 partnership. But, with the score 110-2, Humphreys clipped a mistimed shot to mid-wicket and presented an easy catch.
Morley went through a further two partnerships with Keelan Nugent (run out for 19) and Steve Evans (caught on 18), and on 89 looked set to reach three figures before being bowled trying to sweep a straight ball.
The remaining five batsmen all contributed in their own way to close the innings on 259 all out in the last over.
More rain at the tea interval meant a delayed start to the Failsworth innings, which was calculated to be a revised score of 215 from 33 overs and for Heywood eight wickets required.
Failsworth came out swinging and the Heywood opening attack of James Mills and Ethan Harding stuck to their task with tight lines and good lengths.
That frustrated the home openers and, and with six overs gone and the home team on 24, the wickets started to fall.
The bowling line-up was changed at regular intervals to further frustrate the opposition, with nine bowlers used within 28 overs of the recalculated 33.
They all stuck to their tasks and, yes, every now and then the Failsworth side had a big over. But that did not faze the young Heywood team, who continued with the task in hand.
The wickets were shared out with Mills and Dan Joesbury taking two each while Harding, Cavan Hilton, Humphreys and Morley Jnr shared the rest.
Encouraging to see strength in depth in a young developing team with many of the players set to be pushing the selectors in time to come. Top effort!
