REPORT BY ROGER SMETHURST: Heywood 3rds returned to Crimble boosted by their victory the previous week but with a much changed side facing local rivals Bamford Fieldhouse.

Senior players Roger Smethurst, Rick Purser, John Keyworth and Joey O’Neill were missing, with  Mikey Grogan and Jacob Kaye making their first appearances of the season.

Heywood batted first and struggled on a sluggish surface against some tight bowling.

Matt Hood was the first to depart in the 11th over with Heywood only on 16, and this put pressure on Jacob Kaye to try and increase the tempo as he came to the crease.

Using his feet well, Kaye scored 27 in a partnership of 62 with young opener Matt Dearden before he was the next to fall in the 30th over with the score on 78.

Dearden continued with his fine form of recent weeks and accumulated steadily as his new partner, Mikey Grogan, again sought to add impetus to the Heywood score in an innings of 20 not out as Heywood finished on 113-2 from their 40 overs.

Dearden impressively batted the entire innings for his 40 not out and the pick of the Bamford bowling was young Dan Openshaw – a former Heywood player – who finished with 2-27 from 12 overs.

Heywood knew that, to have any chance of success, early wickets were required along with disciplined line and length bowling.

With the usual opening bowlers missing the pressure was on Tom Pagett and Will Taylor to deliver and both struggled early on to find the required penetration on a sluggish pitch.

Pagett eventually got the breakthrough with a wicket in the 12th over when the score reached 37, but this proved to be a rare success for the Heywood attack as Openshaw then showed his ability with the bat. He eventually fell for 48, just short of a well deserved half-century.

Heywood’s change bowlers worked hard with 14-year-old Ethan Clarkson the pick of the attack in a spell of six overs for just 17 runs.

Connor McNally, Aarron Russell and Jacob Kaye each picked up a wicket but it all proved in vain as Bamford passed the Heywood score with four overs remaining.
